EAST BRIDGEWATER — Chief John Dzialo reports that East Bridgewater firefighters extinguished an early morning house fire on Pleasant Avenue on Sunday.
At approximately 12:30 a.m., on Sunday, June 21, the East Bridgewater Fire Department received a report of a fire on the porch of a residence at 90 Pleasant Ave. Engine 1 was first to arrive and found heavy fire on a porch that had extended into the home.
Firefighters immediately launched an aggressive attack on the fire while calling for mutual aid assistance.
Crews from the Bridgewater, West Bridgewater, Whitman and Abington fire departments responded to the scene. Hanson Fire provided station coverage. Brockton and Halifax firefighters were initially requested but were canceled before arriving. Off-duty East Bridgewater firefighters also responded to assist.
Two residents and a dog safely escaped the home. Working smoke alarms alerted the occupants and allowed them to evacuate before firefighters arrived.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and prevent further extension into the home. Crews remained on scene conducting overhaul and checking for hidden pockets of fire before ultimately clearing the scene around 3 a.m.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the East Bridgewater Fire Department.
As the investigation continues, Chief Dzialo reminds residents to always have working fire alarms installed and to practice proper fire safety when using outdoor fire pits, chimineas and grills. They should never be left unattended and should always be fully extinguished after use.
“Please, practice proper fire safety this summer and in all seasons, especially when using outdoor fire pits, chimineas and grills,” said Chief Dzialo. “Extreme caution must be practiced when using them near or on combustible surfaces and structures. When using fire pits, chimineas and grills, the fire must be completely extinguished after use. Residents should also please be sure to have working smoke alarms in place.”
“During this fire on Sunday morning, working smoke alarms gave residents the early warning they needed to get out safely,” added Chief Dzialo. “This is an important reminder of how crucial it is to have functioning smoke alarms in every home. We’re grateful that no one was injured, and we appreciate the assistance provided by our mutual aid partners and off-duty personnel.”
